Our History
Mary McLeod Bethune Day Academy (MMBDA) was founded in 2003 by Dr. Linda McKay, who envisioned a high-quality educational option for families in Washington, DC’s Ward 7. Recognizing the lack of comprehensive programs in the area, Dr. McKay aimed to provide small class sizes and a well-rounded curriculum that included foreign language, art, music, and physical education.
In 2004, MMBDA opened its doors and was warmly received by the community. In its early years, the school operated out of multiple locations, including churches and the Boys and Girls Club, before securing space in the former Slowe Elementary School building. Eventually, MMBDA leased the entire 54,000-square-foot facility, which became its permanent home.
Today, MMBDA serves students from across the city, including the Brookland and Takoma Park neighborhoods. To ensure accessibility for all families, the school offers bus transportation to and from campus.
