Dr. Linda McKay named the school Mary McLeod Bethune Day Academy Public Charter School after hearing her mother, a lifelong learner and dedicated educator, tell stories of growing up and being highly influenced by her neighbor, Mary McLeod Bethune, who profoundly influenced her. As a Washington native, Dr. McKay's mother shared powerful stories about Mary McLeod Bethune's remarkable life and legacy, emphasizing her impact on education, diversity, equal rights, and international-mindedness.
