Dr. Edwin Acevedo, an educator for the past twenty-five years is honored to be the next Principal at Mary McLeod Bethune Day Academy. As a former resident of Miami, Dr. Acevedo brings a wealth of experience in all facets of educational leadership, Board relationships, and teaching and learning. He is passionate about providing equitable opportunities for all students to reach higher levels of learning and providing support to administrators and teachers to meet the demands of an interconnected global society.

Dr. Acevedo, a native of New York City, has worked at all educational levels K-12 in high-achieving suburban and urban school districts. His most recent experience prior to coming to MMBDA was that of the Executive Director for the Doctors Public Charter School in Miami Shores, FL, where he was Citizen of the Year, in 2022. Dr. Acevedo was the Superintendent of Schools of the Long Hill School district in New Jersey. He also instituted new instructional programs for students while also receiving in 2019 state recognition for running a highly efficient school district.
 
Prior to being a Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Acevedo was the Principal of Hazel Avenue School with the West Orange Board of Education in New Jersey. Here, Dr. Acevedo worked collaboratively with parents, teachers, and students to transform this school into one of the highest-achieving schools in the district. Under Dr. Acevedo’s leadership, in 2013, the New Jersey State Assembly and the West Orange Chamber of Commerce recognized the school of excellence. He attributes his success here to the strong relationships he formed with parents, staff, and students and by using his interpersonal skills in English and Spanish.

Previously, Dr. Acevedo was the K – 12, District Supervisor of World Languages with the West Orange Board of Education where he oversaw the development and implementation of world languages programs in Chinese, French, Italian, and Spanish for 7,000 students in 11 district schools. Dr. Acevedo initiated a Chinese program here and created reciprocal global student exchange programs for High School students in Hangzhou, China through a partnership with the Asia Society in New York and Hanban, the education division of the Chinese government. Dr.
Acevedo’s expertise in collaborating with teachers and his knowledge of curriculum development and instructional strategies led to accolades from the New Jersey Department of Education’s Model Curriculum Program. By showcasing excellent teaching and learning in the classroom, Dr. Acevedo obtained the coveted New Jersey Department of Education Model District status in its elementary and Heritage Spanish world languages program for two consecutive terms. Dr. Acevedo began his career in education by teaching Spanish at the middle school and high school levels. Dr. Acevedo earned his Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership, a Master’s degree in
Teaching and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish.
